LIV ERTZEID
Liv Ertzeid’s (b.1986, Lørenskog, Norway) practice unfolds within a world rich in botanical symbolism, natural imagery, and shifting light. Through vivid color, stylized form, and rhythmic brushwork, Ertzeid explores the cycles of nature—its beauty, unease, humor, and quiet menace. Her scenes often balance between the comical and the unsettling: birds, insects, and flowers animated in crepuscular landscapes where darkness and color coexist.
Working in an immediate and expressive manner, Ertzeid layers bold gestures with intricate dots and patterns that infuse her canvases with pulse and rhythm. Her visual language draws freely from diverse painting traditions—from Japanese silk prints and post-impressionism to mid-century illustration and advertising—while remaining unmistakably her own. Across her work, she toys with perspective, proportion, and depth, moving fluidly between figuration and abstraction.
Sculpture forms an integral part of Ertzeid’s practice. Using assemblages of found materials, she creates figures imbued with distinct personalities—imperfect, tactile beings that carry traces of their making and their source materials. These sculptural works act as three-dimensional extensions of her paintings: physical manifestations of her imagined worlds, inhabited by creatures that seem to exist in a realm parallel to our own.
Ertzeid holds a BA (2015) and MA (2019) from the Oslo Academy of Fine Art. Her work has been acquired by major collections including the National Museum of Norway, the Christian Sveaas Art Foundation, and Stortingets Kunstsamling (the Art Collection of the Norwegian Parliament).
